Bridgwater & Taunton College students shine AoC National Championship

The South West region finished in a mighty 2nd place, and our athletes were instrumental in achieving this, competing across Boccia, Cross Country, Table Tennis and Football.

Kicking off a thrilling weekend, Friday saw three of our Foundation Learning students take home a bronze medal for Boccia.

An incredible showing from a recently formed team who have only impressed since their debut.

On Saturday afternoon, four students competed in a challenging 5km Endurance Run known for its particularly hilly environment.

Representing the South West, the collective score and times secured each a 3rd place finish – and another bronze medal for Team BTC.

Facing last-minute scheduling changes, Bertie Kelly stood to defend the title he won last year for Table Tennis and he thrived, only dropping two sets in the entire tournament.

Claiming the Gold medal for his second year at the competition, it didn’t stop there; Bertie and the South West also received the Silver medal for the Table Tennis team event.

The final day of the competition arrived, and it was down to the Women’s Football squad to lead us to further victory.

After an action-packed Saturday, the squad needed two wins to secure a 1st place finish and the Gold medal.

The team continued their streak of recent successes and flourished in both of their games!

Mason Galloway, sports development manager for Team BTC, said: “All in all, 20 students this weekend have impeccably represented the college against the very best across the whole country.

“They’ve each had an amazing experience, walked away with medals, and had lots of fun along the way! I’d call that a monumental success. A massive thank you to all staff involved, too.

“It wouldn’t have been possible without all of you. It has been an amazing weekend for sport and BTC as a whole!”
