Burnley postal worker and borough mayors to be honoured

A Burnley postal worker and two borough mayors will be honoured at a special council meeting on Tuesday (September 9). Michael Heavican will be given a Certificate of Honour while former councillors Ida Carmichael and Rafique Malik will be made aldermen.

The ceremony will be held at Burnley Town Hall’s Council Chamber at 6.30pm. Mr Heavican has been serving the citizens and businesses of Burnley for 44 years through his work at Royal Mail.

He is also a great supporter of local charities, completing charity collections in the town centre dressed as Pudsey Bear and other characters. He has also arranged collections of items such as Easter eggs, and donated them to local charities and schools.

Mrs Carmichael was first elected to the Burnley Borough Council in 1998, representing the ward of Whittlefield with Ightenhill. She retired from the council in 2019 after 21 years of service and was Mayor of the borough in 2008/2009.

Mr Malik was director of the Blackburn Racial Equality Council for seven years retiring in 1997 and, for more than 20 years before that, was in charge of the Hyndburn and Burnley and Pendle RECs. He also served as a Burnley councillor for Daneshouse with Stoneyholme ward for 30 years and was Mayor of the borough in 2000/2001.
