Cainiao and GLS Spain open local delivery network

Chinese logistics giant Cainiao is partnering with Royal Mail-owned GLS Spain to make local deliveries in the country.

Currently the Cainiao/GLS operation serves around 100 AliExpress merchants in Spain thanks to the pilot that was run in August. Under the deal, these merchants can engage the delivery service and their packages will be picked up by GLS the same day. The minimum weight of a total shipment is 1kg or one parcel, whichever is the smaller.

“Spain is one of Cainiao’s key markets in Europe and we have been continuously innovating and improving our services in the region. By providing superior service at a competitive price to support local merchants, we hope to better satisfy local consumers’ needs when they shop locally and to contribute to the development of the local e-commerce ecosystem,” says David Bu, General Manager of Cainiao Network Europe.

Luis Doncel, General Manager of GLS Spain, has pointed out that “the agreement with Cainiao is a testament of the effort we are making throughout our network to develop shipping solutions that adapt to current needs. We agree with Cainiao and AliExpress on our vocation for continuous improvement and technological development, to meet increasingly higher demands of end-users and companies in the current stage of transformation within the sector.”

This is part of a general strengthening of Cainiao’s European services. It has a smart regional eHub in Liege Airport in Belgium which receives European bound cargo flights from China. At the same time it has a truck delivery network across the region covering 30 countries. It has also recently increased its parcel locker network in Spain and France.
