VILLAGERS in Hockley Heath are calling to bring back a post box which has been removed.
Members of the Women’s Institute (WI) were left shocked earlier this month when they discovered their topper was on the floor on Stratford Road and the post box was gone.
Since then Facebook group Spotted: Hockley Heath alongside its members have called on Royal Mail to reinstate the box so letters can once again be sent.
Tracie Pal, who runs the social media group, said: “We were contacted by WI the day the post box was removed as they found their topper just on the floor as the posy box gone. Spotted, who is run by several people, were asked where it had gone and has received many messages about it going.
“The Post Box has bee in situ for over 40 years – we do have some smaller boxes but they are all on the outskirts of the village with twp in bushes so the slugs/snails get in and eat the letters.
“Although post boxes are used less these days, this one was used a lot and is vital facility for older residents, also the Knit and Natter group have been creating some brilliant post box toppers over the years – this is a brilliant group linked to the WI and they are also upset as they do not have a postbox to top anymore.
“As the Postbox has been in situ for over 20 years I believe they could have claimed an easement under the Prescription Act – we are trying to find out if this was done.”
Members of the group have also contacted Ward Councillors and Meriden and Solihull East MP, Saqib Bhatti.
Despite a first attempt to reinstate the post box failed Spotted: Hockley Heath have penned a letter which they say will post on behalf of residents ready for the second wave of petition.
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “The Stratford Road postbox was removed at the request of a local business owner due to parking issues.
“During this process we reviewed service provision, and as the area is well served with three other postboxes located within half a mile, we have made the decision to not replace it.”
The nearest postboxes are located on Spring Lane, Aylesbury Road and The Barn.
