Cargo liner back in Cornwall after transporting multi-million-pound racing cars including Lewis Hamilton’s

A huge cargo liner is back in Cornwall after spending most of 2021 transporting extremely expensive racing cars including Lewis Hamilton’s.

A very distinctive black, white and green ship is currently moored at Falmouth Docks. It was spotted in the same harbour in February, when CornwallLive reported that six-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton’s X44 was on board.

The St Helena, an ex-Royal Mail ship, is now used the ‘floating centrepiece’ of Extreme E, a new FIA backed off-road racing series that solely uses electric SUVs.

The 105-metre ship used to act as the lifeline to the island of St Helena, a remote volcanic outpost in the South Atlantic ocean.

After Extreme E purchased it back in 2018, St Helena received a dramatic makeover with exterior branding and internal refit.

It now has 62 cabins which can sleep up to 175 people, two lounges, an 80-seater restaurant and an 80-seater presentation area.

Extreme E’s races take part in remote places all over the world so, since February, the ship covered 19,000 nautical miles. It went to Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Greenland and Sardinia.

It arrived back into the UK on November 23, in Poole, in preparation for the championship’s final event of its inaugural season – the Jurassic X-Prix – which will take place on December 18 and 19.

In Poole, the crew spent a next few days unloading all of the freight on board, including the all-electric ODYSSEY 21 race cars – three of which are entrants for teams founded by Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button.
