Cash prizes up for grabs in new scheme aiming to get Slough cycling

Budding cycle enthusiasts in Slough have been urged to hop on their bikes and take part in a challenge that pits them against other residents for prizes.

Cycle September sees riders across the town invited sign up for the Love to Ride app, which allows them to compete against each other and win prizes including up to £2,000 in cash.

The challenge is open to cyclists of all ages and abilities; and aims to encourage more people to get outdoors and get active.

Conservative councillor for Haymil Paul Kelly, cabinet member for housing, highways, planning and transport, said:

“Cycling is a great family activity, and can be something for leisure, commuting or exercise purposes.

“We hope people take part in this fun challenge and log their bike rides to be in with a chance to top the leaderboard and potentially win prizes.”

More than 600 people as well as 48 workplaces – including Mars Wrigley and Royal Mail – have signed up for Cycle September.

Cyclists will compete against each other through the Love to Ride app.

It allows riders to track their progress and watch the miles tick over as well as being entered into the prize draws.

Although cyclists are being encouraged to do as much cycling as they can – a journey as little as 10 minutes is enough to be entered into a draw.

The challlenge also offers the prize of winning the bragging rights of finishing top of the leaderboard, in addition to the financial rewards.

The leaderboard pits co-workers against each other and other companies, giving an extra edge to the competition.

It is hoped the event will encourage more cyclists to get involved in the community.

Slough Freewheelers, a group of resident cyclists, meet on a Saturday once a month for a bike ride.
