A Plymouth business owner claims her firm has lost between £10,000 and £20,000 because of the Royal Mail strikes. Hannah Daragon, who runs Hannah’s Games, said the industrial action has had a big impact on her trade as she has been unable to get items to customers.
Postal workers have been staging a series of strikes over a dispute around pay and conditions. Communication Workers Union (CWU) members walked out on December 14 and 15 before further strikes today (December 23) and tomorrow.
The industrial action has caused chaos for many over the Christmas period, with last postal dates having to be revised. Speaking to the BBC News at Six, Hannah said the impact on her business – which sells everything from Christmas games to hen party games – has been negative.
Hannah told the BBC: “It’s been catastrophic. I mean we’ve lost between £10,000 and £20,000 just on the strikes.
“This is a time when people go ‘oh I will grab a game for the Christmas table or the Christmas night out for a work-do. And I cannot get it from them, so people have not been buying and that is our market, and it has just passed us by and won’t see it again until next December.”
She added: “We want them to sort it out. Please sort this out.”
The CWU has indicated it will consider taking further strike action next year. Royal Mail bosses have described the latest walkouts as “a cynical attempt to hold Christmas to ransom”.
