In response to the current coronavirus outbreak, Royal Mail have announced some temporary changes to how their staff will hand over parcels and ‘signed for’ items to customers at the doorstep.
Parcel recipients ‘not at risk’
A statement on the Royal Mail website reads: “Public Health England (PHE) has advised that people receiving parcels are not at risk of contracting the coronavirus. From experience with other coronaviruses, we know that these types of viruses don’t survive long on objects, such as letters or parcels.”
Precautions
However, to minimise risks, Royal Mail delivery staff will not be asking customers to handle and sign their handheld device; and parcels and packages that do not fit through the letter box will be placed at the door – delivery staff will step back and ensure the parcel is securely collected by the recipient.
Full service continues
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Royal Mail continues to deliver a full service across all parts of the UK. We have made temporary changes to delivery processes for the delivery of any parcels which cannot be posted through a letterbox, or items that require a signature.
“We take the safety and wellbeing of our employees and our customers very seriously. We have provided Public Health England preventative guidance to our colleagues in all mail handling and other roles.”
