Part-time commuters will be able to buy flexible season tickets under a trial aimed at modernising rail fares to make them reflect 21st century working patterns.
Passengers who do not travel on trains every day of the week will be able to buy season tickets covering only part of the week, rather than having to buy weekly, monthly or annual tickets.
It is part of a plan for wider reforms of the railways promised by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps which he says will help thousands of passengers save money.
The announcement comes on the day that regulated rail fares go up by an average of 2.7 per cent, meaning fares have increased twice as quickly as wages over the past decade.
