Christmas lights damaged after lorry drives through power cables

The lorry “caused extensive damage to the cabling and caused lights in that area to go off’

West Kirby’s festive winter wonderland was disrupted this week due to an unfortunate incident. Extensive damage was caused to the enchanted forest display after a lorry drove through power cables in the area, volunteers responsible for the Christmas lights announced.

The incident took place on Thursday (November 27) the A540 Grange Road. A spokesperson for the West Kirby Christmas Lights group, which organises the annual switch-on, wrote on Facebook: “We wanted to let you know about an incident that happened earlier today.

“As equipment was being delivered to West Kirby Concourse, the delivery lorry unfortunately drove through the cables that power part of our Enchanted Forest display. This has caused extensive damage to our cabling and has caused lights in that area to go off.

“We know how much you all enjoy the lights, especially at this time of year, so we’re working to get everything fixed as quickly as possible, but please bear with us as it may take a few days.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding — we’ll keep you updated.”

A few hours later, the group shared an update with residents stating that the lights had been repaired by electrician ACDC Electrical Fire & Security.

The big Christmas lights switch-on at West Kirby took place on November 22. As the town was illuminated, West Kirby Christmas Lights chairman Rachel Kehoe said: “Well done to everyone in our community for making West Kirby shine so brightly again this Christmas. The Christmas lights are organised by resident volunteers and are funded by the generosity of our resident and business community.

“Some amazing people make all this magic happen. Phil and Sue Duffy, Nicola Casey, Jan Hibbert, Lesley Rampton and Chris Coldham give so much of their time to make our community shine. We were so lucky to have Charlie Johnson join us this year to brighten our days with his brilliant social media management. Big thanks to Bobby Owens for all the help and for having the most impressive inventory of tools and bits and bobs to get the practical stuff done!

“We wouldn’t be able to do it without Bernie and the girls at The Front Room etc who do so much to help with all of the resident donations and Trish at Eden Floral Design who gives us so much support with our fundraising each year. Big thanks also to Kim Waters Design who helps us every year with our logos, design and printing and deals with our last minute emergencies with such good humour.

“A big shout out to all the street collectors who deliver all the leaflets and coordinate all the the resident donations. Thank you!

“Finally thanks to the Darrell and Jay from local West Kirby company ACDC Electrical Fire & Security for becoming our new installation team this year. They have been out in all weather getting everything installed. Amazing job! And thanks to Howard Boyd & Phil for coming out of Christmas lights retirement to get everything ready for today. We couldn’t have done it without you.

“The Christmas lights display is a community effort. Thanks to everyone who donated to make it happen and to all the businesses who donated and sponsored. We hope you love the lights and we hope you have a fabulous Christmas.”
