The Columbus Philatelic Club has announced its decision to drop the American Philatelic Society World Series of Philately status of Colopex, the club’s annual show held in the Columbus, Ohio, area. The decision is effective immediately.
Guy Purington, the club’s president, informed Darrell Ertzberger, chairman of the APS Committee on Accreditation of National Exhibitions and Judges, of the decision by the club’s membership in an Aug. 28 email.
“This decision was not taken lightly, and the matter left open for thorough discussion and debate over the last couple of months,” Purington said. “It simply has become untenable for us to continue on the [World Series of Philately] circuit.”
According to Purington, the club is having a hard time finding a venue for the show.
“Our current hotel is barely within budget, they are slow walking future contracts, including the one for the Worthington Stamp Show this December which may not happen this year,” Purington said. “We’ve considered a dozen possible alternatives since the first of the year and have not found a workable replacement.”
“The club is thriving, we are gaining a more diverse membership, and increasing our efforts to build philately in central Ohio through outreach,” Purington said. “We are also developing a wonderful relationship with the Columbus Historical Society. It is towards these ends that we feel our energy and resources are better directed.”
In response to questions from Linn’s Stamp News, Purington stated there will not be a Colopex show in 2025. “It also highly likely that there will not be a Worthington 2024 [show] this December unless we can solve the venue issue posthaste.”
To mark the 100th anniversary of the Columbus Philatelic Club, Purington said the club is working diligently with the Worthington Stamp Club to host a joint show in 2025. “The name is yet to be determined,” he said.
“Many of us feel that ‘Two Great Clubs, One Great Show’ will, in the long run, do more to promote the hobby in central Ohio,” Purington said.
“Cross pollination is important to the future of our hobby, and the future of collector and history clubs in general,” he said.
