Confused after Royal Mail post box moved ‘without warning’

Business owners have reported seeing multiple confused residents outside their shops over the last week, after Royal Mail suddenly removed one of its post boxes.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said it is responsible for the missing post box following a request from the landowner adding it has no plans to replace it.

Jai Barnes, owner of Poolbrook Pet Supplies, has been having up to five people a day pop into her shop asking where the post box has gone.

Miss Barnes said: “It was removed on Wednesday (March 18) morning with no notice whatsoever.

“The landlord requested for it to be moved, and I’ve been having about five people per day ask where it has gone.

“Lots of my customers post their letters here and pop in, so it does have the potential to affect business. Meanwhile, a lot of older customers can’t walk to the nearest one, so they are a bit upset about that.”

Tom Hodges of Hodges Hair on Poolbrook Road said: “The post box was removed, I think last Thursday (March 19). I think the landlord requested for it to be moved, but I think they are also changing a lot of them to digital post boxes now.

“They came out and removed it without warning at all.

“We’ve been having a lot of people turn up to try to use the post box, generally elderly users, and they are wondering where it has been moved to.

“The nearest one is a bit further down the road, but ours was convenient because you could park right next to it.

“Royal Mail said they would not place another one in the area unless there was enough of a call for it.

“They will only put one up if people are asking for it.

“That post box had been there for many years and often had lovely knitted post box toppers on it.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “The Poolbrook Road postbox has been removed at the request of the landowner.

“As the area is already well-served with the Brook Farm postbox within 0.1 miles, we have made the decision to not replace it.

“Alternatively, customers can find other nearby postboxes on our Services Near You page or can hand stamped letters to their postie.”

We have been unable to contact the landowner.
