Convicted Worcester paedophile jailed for staying over with kids

A Worcestershire convicted paedophile has been sent back to jail for breaching his notification requirements after staying overnight at a house full of children.

Stephen Medley, of King’s Hill, Kempsey in Worcester, is supposed to let police know if he stays at any other address for over seven days and if he stays anywhere with children under the age of 18 for at least 12 hours.

The 54-year-old is on the sex offenders register after being convicted of eight counts of rape in 2008 including three with children – but failed to let anyone know he was staying with a woman where youngsters were present, Worcester Magistrates’ Court heard.

West Mercia Police officers made the discovery after doing a vehicle registration check on his car, when it was parked outside the woman’s house. They also became concerned that children are regularly at the premises.

Owen Beale, prosecuting, said: “The defendant was convicted of eight counts of rape, three of which were on children, and had a number of indecent photos of children, which put him on the register.

“There are a number of notifications he has to adhere to. There are a number of children at the address he was staying over at, which is a breach of his requirements. Medley has to notify police if he stays at a residence with under-18s for over 12 hours.

“Police officers visiting someone in the road saw his vehicle by the house and when they looked it up, they realised it was a registered sex offenders’ vehicle and that’s how this came to light.”

The court heard Medley had contact with six children.

He pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to comply with notification requirements while on the sexual offenders register between September 21 last year and June 23 this year.

The court was told Medley had begun a relationship and not hidden it but “made a mistake” in not notifying authorities of where he was staying.

Medley said he hadn’t realised about the 12-hour rule for if he was around children. He also thought the notification applied to if he stayed seven days in a row and not seven days in total in a year at another address.

Since being remanded in custody awaiting his case, Medley revealed that he had a fiance, who sent him hundreds of emails and talked to him every day, and they planned to marry next year.

Medley was sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment for each of the two offences, to run concurrently. He was also ordered to pay £128 victim surcharge.

Chair of the magistrates’ bench Kevin Lloyd Wright said: “These are two serious offences and we are sending you to prison for 16 weeks.”

He added that Medley’s early guilty plea and time remanded in prison while awaiting his case, which was delayed due to Covid, were taken into consideration.
