A SCOTTISH Labour MP’s campaign to save high street banks and cash machines has been praised by Jeremy Corbyn on a visit to the constituency of Rutherglen and Hamilton West.
Ged Killen snatched the seat from the Scottish Nationalists by just 265 votes at the 2017 election.
Speaking to a packed function room at the Blantyre Miners’ Welfare Club on Sunday, the Labour leader said: “Working-class communities increasingly get excluded from the banking system, excluded from the ability to borrow money of any sort.”
Mr Corbyn said the local MP’s campaign “leads absolutely into what we want to do as a Labour government.”
He added: “Take Royal Mail back into public ownership, reintegrate it with the Post Office that it should never have been separated from and establish a Post Bank in every part of the country so that we don’t leave high streets in poor working-class communities behind.”
Praising Mr Killen’s record as an MP, Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard said: “We want to get Jeremy Corbyn into Downing Street and the only way we’re going to do that is by electing as well as re-electing Labour MPs from Scotland.
“And let me just say this: for the avoidance of doubt, the only way to get a Jeremy Corbyn-led government is by voting for Labour — there is no shortcut through the SNP.
“So we need to get out there, get our sleeves rolled up and get some energy into getting Ged re-elected.”
Mr Killen said: “It was great to welcome Jeremy Corbyn and Richard Leonard to Blantyre this afternoon.
“I was also really pleased to see people who are not signed up members come to hear from Jeremy about Labour’s radical plans to transform our society and our economy so that it delivers equality, fairness and prosperity for working people instead of a select few at the top.
“When the prize is this big, the fight will always be tough but, against the odds, we won in Rutherglen and Hamilton West in 2017 and we are ready to do it all over again.”
