If you’re thinking of sending Christmas presents via post to the UK this year you might want to post them early, as Royal Mail workers are going on strike right up to Christmas Eve.
Cork post offices are urging customers who are hoping for parcels or letters to reach Britain in time for Christmas to send them early to avoid any disappointment.
Offices across the county are already alerting customers, who could easily get caught out by the strikes that will be the first to hit the Royal Mail during the festive season in decades.
One sign in Schull in West Cork warns customers: “Royal Mail to strike for 3 days a week. For the next 4 weeks. Post early for Xmas.”
While An Post’s official ‘Last Postal Dates’ for Christmas 2022 indicates that the last date to post to Great Britain in time for Christmas is December 19th, given the ongoing strike action it is not yet clear whether Irish mail posted to the UK will be affected.
The Communication Worker’s Union (CWU) in the UK said its members will be taking industrial action over a long-running dispute in relation to pay, jobs and conditions, for the next four weeks.
Members will walk out on the 9, 11, 14, 15, 23 and 24 of December. This is in addition to strikes already scheduled for November 24, 25, 30, and 1 December.
A statement issued by the Royal Mail says: “Royal Mail has well-developed contingency plans, but we cannot fully replace the daily efforts of our frontline workforce. We’ll be doing what we can to keep services running, but we are sorry this planned strike action is likely to cause you some disruption.
“We will not be delivering letters on days when national strike action is taking place.
“Post your items as early as possible in advance of the strike dates.”
