Cornwall planning: Cliff steps, beach café and post box among latest plans

Cliff steps, a beach cafe and even a post box are among the latest planning applications submitted to Cornwall Council.

Every week more than 100 applications are validated by Cornwall Council and we have selected some of the more interesting proposals. All planning applications submitted to the council have to be validated and are available for inspection by the public. Anyone is also allowed to submit comments about the applications – whether in support or objection.

The majority of applications are decided by planning officers at the council under delegated powers. However, some applications will go before elected councillors who sit on planning committees. No dates have been set for when the planning applications below will be determined. They can be viewed by going to the planning portal on Cornwall Council’s website.

The trustees of the Haven and Oxhey Settlement have applied for planning to carry out some engineering work to the sea cliff at St Mawes and erected a set of private-access steps leading down to the foreshore Haven Lodge garden.

The application, which can be consulted at PA24/08310, concerns land south east of Haven Lodge on Lower Castle Road. The proposed development site mainly consists of a sea cliff – approximately nine metres in height – that has been stabilised with gabion baskets, below and in front of which is the rocky foreshore.

In their application they said: “In summary, the engineering works to the sea cliff consist of the construction of a concrete plinth at the foot of the gabion baskets, the installation of rock anchors in the sea cliff and the installation of rockfall netting which will be pinched back with steel rope and attached to the rock anchors.

“Steps from the foreshore up to garden level will be constructed from galvanised steel and utilise the abovementioned concrete plinth for support and stability. An opening in the upper rows of gabion baskets will enable the top flight of steps to be set back into the sea cliff.”

They added: “It is intended that the construction of steps from the shore to the Haven Lodge garden enhances the amenity value and desirability of the land thus enabling the applicants to achieve a tangible benefit beyond the safeguarding of the sea cliff.”
