In the past 24 hours, the death toll in Italy has increased by 345, taking the total number of coronavirus-related deaths past 2,500. In Spain the number of casualties increased by 182 overnight, pushing the total number of deaths close to 500. A new coronavirus tracker produced by the Financial Times has revealed Italy has almost the same amount of deaths in 21 days as China had in 35 days.
In 21 days following the 10th recorded death in the country, Italy has 2,503 casualties of Covid-19.
In five weeks (35 days) China had 2715 deaths.
The number of cases in the country continues to soar and has seen a further 2,326 cases diagnosed with 343 in the city of Milan alone.
In Spain, authorities have confirmed the number of cases has increased to 11,178 with 491 deaths.
The graph shows a steep increase in Spain with the number of deaths doubling in the past three days.
In Spain, 47 million people have been under partial lockdown since Saturday night.
Residents are only allowed to leave their homes to go to work, buy food or visit a pharmacy or hospital.
On Monday the Spanish Government shut its land borders to all but Spaniards, permanent residents and cross-border workers.
The Balearic Islands – among Europe’s most popular holiday destinations – closed their air space and ports to visitors.
Hans Kluge the World Health Organisation’s Regional Director for Europe has said the continent is now the “epicentre” of the outbreak and has urged every nation to take the “boldest actions” against the virus.
Mr Kluge said: “Europe is the epicentre of the first pandemic of coronavirus and every country, with no exceptions, needs to take their boldest actions to stop or slow the virus spread.”

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the advice takes effect immediately and would last for an initial 30-day period.
Mr Raab said: “UK travellers abroad now face widespread international border restrictions and lock downs in various countries.
“The speed and range of those measures across other countries is unprecedented.
“So I have taken the decision to advise British nationals against all non-essential international travel.”
