Coronavirus updates as UK death toll passes 1,000

The number of people in the UK who have died after testing positive for COVID-19 coronavirus has risen by 260, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths to 1,019.

It’s the biggest daily rise so far in the UK. Yesterday there were 181 new deaths.

The latest UK figures were released this afternoon.

The UK Government says: “As of 9am on 28 March 2020, a total of 120,776 people have been tested, of which 103,687 were confirmed negative and 17,089 were confirmed positive.

“As of 5pm on 27 March 2020, 1,019 patients in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) have died.

“The figures for test results and for deaths are compiled from different sources. This is why the figures for deaths are reported from an earlier point in time than the figures for test results.”

Yesterday’s updated statistics showed that another 181 people in the UK with virus had sadly died – bringing the total number of deaths in the UK to 759, up from 578.

The Department of Health added that number of people who had tested positive for Covid-19 had risen to 14,579 as of 9am on Friday, up from 11,658 at the same point on Thursday.

A total of 113,777 people have been tested with 99,198 testing negative.

So far today, Retailer Boots has announced it is launching free drive-through COVID-19 coronavirus testing centres – with one of the first opening at Chessington World of Adventures – to support the Government’s plan to test NHS workers showing symptoms of the virus.

It comes as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose again across the Devon County Council authority area again yesterday, March 27, with a further 18 confirmed bringing the total to 120.

Whilst in Torbay there are now 23 in total, after two more were made public, and six more have arisen in Plymouth. Five new cases have also been confirmed in Cornwall.

The advice is still much to stay at home while the pandemic continues in the UK and the battle to contain cases and the number of deaths is ongoing for our health service.

Meanwhile, more than 18,000 doctors, nurses and other former NHS staff have volunteered to return to work to fight the virus.

The en masse effort came after NHS England chief executive Sir Simon Stevens was forced to defend his track record heading the service, with the country’s proportion of intensive care units before the crisis among the lowest in Europe.
