A property has been branded ‘dangerous’
A street has been closed for more than 10 days due to the dangerous condition of a building. However, residents living on Clifton Street in May Bank have been left puzzled by the move which they say came out of nowhere.
A recent inspection carried out by Newcastle Borough Council revealed that it was essential to close the pavement and road on public safety grounds. No further information has been given about the condition of the building.
Councillor Andrew Fear, Newcastle Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Strategic Planning, said: “We attended a house in Clifton Street and found that the front of the property was in a dangerous condition and that it was essential for public safety that we temporarily close the pavement and highway in front of the building.”

Residents living on Clifton Street say the fencing just appeared with no more information given.
Ann Fox said: “It’s a bit puzzling really, I’m not sure what’s going on with it. People came the other day wearing hi-visibility jackets and put the fencing up.
“I had a look at the house and I can’t see any issues with it. It is slightly worrying as well because it’s a mid-terrace house so who knows what’s going on.”
Delivery driver, Scott Clewes said: “It’s a slight pain because you’ll need to turn around or reverse down the road. I guess there isn’t really much you can do about it but I’m not sure why they would need to close the whole road.”
There is no notice displayed on the fencing surrounding the building and it is not known when the road will be reopened.
In a statement Staffordshire County Council stated the road will only be opened once the owner makes repairs to the building.
Councillor Patrick Allen, Cabinet Support Member for Highways – North at Staffordshire County Council said: “We have been asked by Newcastle Borough Council’s Building Control team to temporarily close the street on safety grounds due to an unsafe building. The owner of the building is responsible for making the repairs and once these are complete and the area made safe, the road can be reopened.”
