Coventry barber who gives free haircuts to homeless people hailed for his ‘amazing work’

Readers showed lots of support for Coventry barber Abdulghani Najjar, 24, who gave free haircuts to the homeless earlier this year. One said he is ‘an amazing guy’ and that ‘humanity still exists’.

Abdul is the owner of Abz Barbers on Harnall Lane East in Hillfields. He came to the UK in 2016 after fleeing the war in Syria with his family and opened his shop in 2021 after gaining experience trimming family members’ hair as his dad and uncle were former barbers.

He was inspired by the holy month of Ramadan in March to give back to the community and give free haircuts to the homeless. He previously told CoventryLive he likes ‘helping out people’ and enjoyed making the less fortunate ‘happy with a small gesture’ and hopes to do more concepts like free haircuts in the future.

His main client base is young people between 16 and 25 as he gets most of his clients through social media. He said that most of his client base don’t just come for a haircut, they also come to ‘get advice’ and added he always tries to give the young people ‘valuable life lessons’ which can help them in the future.

Abdul’s goals are to become better in business and get his ‘name out there’, and hopefully start teaching people one day at a barbering school. Readers took to the CoventryLive Facebook page to offer their support for Abdul’s initiative of doing ‘great things in the local community’.

Elaine Cook said: “Well done, good for you. Restores my faith in humanity. There are some good people out there.” Robert Rogers said: “It may be said some people don’t have a Heart but we know this guy does. To cut the homeless people’s hair says a lot about him, god bless.”

Debbie Cotterill said: “When people talk about not letting foreigners into the country, just take a look at this young man who escaped from an awful situation and has put something good into his community in Coventry. How many of us native English people say the same? Well done Abz, you are amazing!.”

Maggie O’Kane said: “That’s amazing. Good-looking hair assists with mental well-being. Well done for providing such a valuable service.” Theresa Edmands said: “Amazing and wish more businesses were like yours.”

Mikey Jon added: “At least somebody in this city has a heart” while Barbara Jones said: “What a lovely thing to do bless you.”
