Crown Princess Mary of Denmark rewears gown for New Year

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark was a vision in white today for a New Year’s diplomatic reception as she rewore one of her favourite glamorous gowns for the fourth time in five years.

The 47-year-old royal wowed in a trusty favourite by Birgit Hallstein for the annual event at Christiansborg palace in Copenhagen, having previously worn the stunning white gown for New Year events in 2015 and 2016.

On this occasion Crown Princess Mary, who joined Crown Prince Frederik, 51, and Queen Margrethe II, 79, at the event, paired the gown with a chic cream coat.

It’s the second time this week that the royal has proved her dedication to sustainable fashion, after she wore a burgundy ball gown for the fourth time in 12 years at the Danish royal family’s annual New Year reception on Wednesday night.

Twice voted the world’s most stylish royal, Mary is a passionate advocate for sustainability and is known for recycling expensive pieces and restyling them with effortless flair.

And today the Australian-born royal appeared stunning in the white gown, which she has previously worn three times in the past five years.

The royal previously donned the outfit for the New Year’s Banquet in 2015, before wearing it during a State visit in March of the same year.

She later wore the same gown for the New Year’s diplomatic reception in 2016.

On this occasion, she stayed true to her signature stylish yet conservative style with softly pulled-back hair to reveal a pair of pearl earrings.

The royal kept her make-up bright, sweeping a touch of pink gloss across her lips and a touch of highlighter on her cheekbones.

Meanwhile Frederik looked dapper in full ceremonial dress complete with his traditional blue sash displaying his medals.

The royal couple joined Queen Margrethe II at the event, who wore a striking electric-blue gown with fur cuffs and collar.

The New Year’s Diplomatic Reception is an annual event held in honour of the members of the diplomatic corps.

As is custom on ceremonial occasions Mary could be seen wearing a blue sash representing her Order of the Elephant.

The Order is Denmark’s oldest and most distinguished royal order of chivalry, and can be dated back to 1460.

It has already proven a busy week for the Danish royals who celebrated the New Year at a ball at Christian VII’s Palace in Amalienborg yesterday.

This traditional New Year’s Eve ball began in 1693 when Christian VII gave the Elephant Order statues to the Danish Ordinances on January 1.

While it used to be an exclusive celebration for kings and knights of the day, the circle later extended to include royal ladies, the cabinet’s leadership and selected institutions closely related to the empire.

It has since become a way for the reigning Queen to give a New Year’s address to her family and close associates.
