A cruel thief stole a nurse’s car while she looked after Hull’s “sick and needy”, a court heard.
Ashley Taylor, 29, was traced following a raid on staff room lockers at Hull Royal Infirmary where he stole three sets of car keys, a coat and then used a nurse’s car as a getaway vehicle.
Hull Crown Court heard the car was later recovered after being placed in a police impound, however, the nurse said she felt the car had been “defiled” and wanted to get rid of it.
One nurse said she had been left out in the freezing cold for hours after finding out at the end of a gruelling shift that her car keys had been taken.
Prosecutor Michelle Stuart-Lofthouse said: “One set of keys was later used to steal a grey Hyundai i30 car from the nearby car park in Argyle Street.
“The vehicle was driven through a barrier at the car park before being driven off along Anlaby Road.
“It was recovered from the impound where she says it cost £5,000 to get back and repair it, but I think that could be more £500 – and that is a mistake.”
Taylor had entered the busy hospital on Saturday, December 29, 2018, and had “tried lockers” until he found items of value, the court was told.

Upon leaving the car park, police had said Taylor had “smashed through” the barrier.
A police appeal later located Taylor, of Boughton Avenue, Scunthorpe, whose CCTV image was shared on social media.
Taylor pleaded guilty to the theft at an earlier hearing, but sentencing in the case had been deferred to see if the defendant could turn his life around.
David Godfrey, defending, said Taylor was at a low point at the time of committing the crime and has since kept himself out of trouble while helping his mother look after his father who did not have long to live.
He said: “Your honour, the defendant’s father is unwell as he has been diagnosed with a terminal illness.
“He is 19 stone and regularly helps his mother – who is the primary carer.”
Suspending a six-month sentence for 12 months the Recorder of Hull, Judge Paul Watson QC, said: “These members of staff were preyed upon at the time they were looking after the sick and needy.
“One said, despite her vehicle being recovered, she felt like she could no longer drive it because it had been defiled.
“One other nurse said she had to stand outside in the freezing cold at the end of her shift.”
Judge Watson ordered Taylor to pay back £450 in cash to the three complainants at a rate of £10-per-week.
He told him: “I have heard the opening of this case before so there is no need to go over it again, but I’ve given you a chance Ashley Taylor and you have taken it. That is the reason why I suspend this sentence today.”
