Cultural groups awarded grants to mark Jubilee celebrations

A range of artistic projects have been set up after borough groups won £15,000 in council grants to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The council set up a fund to help creative talents in Bury create artwork to celebrate the jubilee and to reflect on life in Bury during the Queen’s reign.

There are four projects that will be creating a range of different art pieces.

A large-scale jubilee quilt will be made celebrating the last 70 years of Bury’s history during the Queen’s reign.

Led by The Big Fandango, Creative Living Centre and Rammy Men, it will involve workshops across the borough, with people invited to bring along mementoes that celebrate events over the last seven decades.

The final piece will be gifted to Bury as a piece of historical art to be displayed.

Another project will be a series of postage stamps that will be inspired by Bury and its residents.

Adults and children alike will take part, from the NHS and Age UK Bury, to the Met Express Drama Group, Bury Adult Learning Centre, ESOL, and other disadvantaged socio-economic groups.

The designs will be displayed at Bury Art Gallery and Sculpture Centre.

These will then be sent to the Royal Mail and Buckingham Palace to show the identity and character of the people of Bury at a time of national celebration.

An arts and crafts workshop hosted by Jigsaw based in Bury that promotes fun, freedom and independence for disabled people while also working to prevent social isolation, improve self-esteem and increase community integration will encourage volunteers to create decorations, including a “design your own crown” competition.

A Jubilee Commemorative Plate will be a project led by the Mill Gate.

This project involves the creation of colouring sheets for children to design a special plate celebrating the Jubilee.

Winners will be invited to a party where they can create their design in real life, working with a pottery company.

Cllr Charlotte Morris, cabinet member for culture and the economy at the council, said: ““We’re all looking forward to marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Bury and across our six towns, and it was great to see so many community groups, individuals and neighbourhoods come forward with creative ideas for celebrating this momentous occasion.

“I’m delighted that, through our ongoing commitment to culture, the council has been able to offer financial support to these projects which will bring together people across our borough in sharing their artistic talents in commemoration of our longest serving monarch.”
