Lucy Harrison was shot in the chest at her father Kris Harrison’s Texas home following an argument about Trump’s inauguration
A father who fatally shot his 23 year old daughter while she was holidaying in the US has expressed deep remorse for his actions.
Lucy Harrison, a Warrington native, was visiting her father’s Texas home with her boyfriend Sam Littler when she was struck by a bullet from ‘medium range’. The Manchester Metropolitan University graduate tragically succumbed to the gunshot wound to her chest, as revealed during an inquest into her death.
The inquest at Cheshire Coroner’s Court disclosed that it was her father, Kris Harrison, who fired the fatal shot. The specific circumstances surrounding her death were unveiled for the first time, including the fact that he had allegedly lied about consuming alcohol on the day of the incident, January 10, 2025.
As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Lucy and her boyfriend Sam Littler had arrived at her father’s residence in Prosper, Texas, on December 28, 2024, after flying out from Heathrow Airport. The couple, who had purchased their first home together just nine months prior, had celebrated their first Christmas in their new home with family members mere days before departing the UK.
Medical reports confirmed that Lucy was shot in the chest by another individual, with five witnesses present in the house at the time of the police’s arrival. The reports also indicated that Lucy had no alcohol or drugs in her system.
Despite the evidence of a gunshot wound inflicted by another person, a Texas jury ruled on June 10 last year that no one would face prosecution over her death. In the state of Texas, if a jury decides against criminal proceedings, the individual charged by the police remains unnamed.
In a statement released through his legal representatives, Lucy’s father, Mr Harrison, said: “I fully accept the consequences of my actions, and there isn’t a day I don’t feel the weight of that loss – a weight I will carry for the rest of my life, and I know that nothing I say can ease the heartbreak this tragedy has caused.
“I cannot undo what happened, but I can honour Lucy by being the best father I can be to her sisters and by carrying her memory forward in everything we do. I am deeply sorry for the pain others feel from this tragedy. Lucy’s spirit – her warmth, her humour, her kindness – will live on in all of us who loved her.”
Mr Harrison did not appear at the hearing but provided a statement explaining that he and his daughter had been viewing a television news report about gun crime when he mentioned owning a firearm and asked whether she wished to see it.
Following her affirmative response, they proceeded to the bedroom where he revealed the Glock 9mm semi-automatic handgun, which he stored in the bedside cabinet, he stated. He claimed to have purchased the weapon a couple of years earlier because he desired a “sense of security” for his family, whilst denying having previously discussed it with his daughter.
He also noted that a licence is not necessary when a firearm is owned for home defence in Texas. Mr Harrison stated he couldn’t remember if his finger was on the trigger when he removed the gun from its case. He said: “As I lifted the gun to show her I suddenly heard a loud bang. I did not understand what had happened. Lucy immediately fell.”
He admitted to past struggles with alcohol and confessed to a “brief lapse” on the day of his daughter’s death due to being emotional about her departure back home to the UK. He revealed that he consumed 500ml of white wine over two to three hours earlier in the day.
Lucy’s mother, Jane Coates, described her daughter, an employee of fashion brand Boohoo, as a “real force of life”. She said: “She cared. She was passionate about things. She loved to have debates about things that meant a lot to her.” Meanwhile, testimony from Lucy’s boyfriend Sam suggested there was a dispute between Mr Harrison and his daughter around the time of Donald Trump’s inauguration.
He recalled: “That morning I was technically working. The girls were outside playing in the snow but that morning Heather [Harrison, Kris Harrison’s wife] was working in the other room, I was working in the kitchen.
“It was quite wholesome. There was a big argument that morning, it was during the time Trump had been inaugurated, off the back of that Kris and Lucy had a big argument and it led to Lucy running upstairs upset.”
