Darlington postwoman to walk 400 miles to Cornwall

Fifty-year-old Nikki Gaynor is not a stranger to taking big swings and tough challenges when it comes to fundraising.

In 2024, the Royal Mail postwoman took on a 5k run each day and this year she’s hoping to walk 30 million steps.

The two week journey will see Nikki, a grandmother of one, stop off at Royal Mail Delivery Offices along the way before crossing the line in Cornwall.

Nikki told The Northern Echo: “Along the way, we’re going to be handing out If U Care Share inside out packs – because it’s suicide prevention day in September.

“We’re trying to start a conversation about getting what’s inside, out, and talk about mental health and suicide prevention as well.”

The exact route Nikki, a keen runner, will take down south is still being mapped out – but it is expected that she will be walking for 12 hours a day for two weeks.

“Being a postie has made me excellent at it. I just really want to make a difference. If I can save one person, I’ve made a difference.

“The North East has the highest suicide rate in the UK – and one suicide can impact up to 135 people.”

Nikki’s connection to the foundation runs deep – as they pulled her through a difficult time in her life after her friend took their life.

She added: “I’m doing this because I lost a friend to suicide. The If U Care Share foundation helped me through the loss of them, and they were amazing with me.

“I wanted to give back, so I’ve been fundraising for them since 2021. They have saved over 4,000 people and are so needed in the area.

“I want to keep shouting for them and make everyone aware that they are there if you need help.”
