D&D and The Royal Mail Collab with Wayne Reynolds for New Stamps

Wayne Reynolds, aka the man who defined the look of D&D back in 3E and 4E (and Pathfinder), made eight stamps for the Royal Mail.

I don’t know why it seems fitting that D&D is getting postage stamps as part of its 50th Anniversary. But it does. Maybe because D&D is a sort of ridge to a distant time, one both immemorial and also everpresent, maybe it’s because the stuff on stamps feels like it has to be around a while. And while 50 years isn’t that long in the grand scheme of things, it’s long enough that you wouldn’t feel weird seeing it on a postage stamp.

It’s right up there with things like Star Wars and Sherlock Holmes. But it’d be weird, we can all agree, to see a Fortnite postage stamp. Not to knock it; it just feels a little too soon to snag a postage stamp of Goku hitting the Griddy near Pleasant Piazza or something. Even though the idea of Goku hitting the Griddy happened basically fifty years ago.

But back to D&D. The Royal Mail, which sounds even more like something you’d find in D&D, teamed up with legendary artist Wayne Reynolds to create eight D&D postage stamps. Now, these are different from the ones you might have seen at the USPS. The Royal Mail stamps use Reynolds’ signature style.

Let’s talk about that for a second. Wayne Reynolds is a huge part of the reason that D&D looks the way it does. His illustrations are all over 3rd and 4th Edition and Pathfinder as well. You can tell right away just by looking.

It looks more plucky and adventury than a Modern Major General, is what I’m saying. Less cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse, though.

But that makes it very exciting to see Reynolds work back for the 50th Anniversary of D&D. The Royal Mail interviewed Reynolds, and of course, they have all the images you’re hankering to see. So, let’s get to it.

The Royal Mail’s D&D Stamps

These stamps will roll out starting July 25th. You can either get a presentation pack featuring all the stamps and a miniature sheet along with it, or you can get a framed, enlarged print of the individual stamps you desire most.

There’s also all the associated philately ephemera, including fan sheets, medal covers, and more, available from the Royal Mail’s website, linked below.

The new stamps include:

  • Mimic
  • Displacer Beast
  • Mind Flayer
  • Red Dragon
  • Beholder
  • Owlbear
  • Gelatinous Cube
  • Vecna (in his new, 5E duds)
