Decision to seal post box in Eastwood is ‘ludicrous’, says councillor

A councillor has said the decision to seal a post box is ‘ludicrous’.

The post box, in Hill Top, Eastwood, was taped off by Royal Mail, leaving locals baffled as to why they couldn’t use it.

Conservative councillor Michael Brown, who represents Greasley at Broxtowe Borough Council and has an office nearby, said it was one of the only post boxes in the area and would be a “big problem” for some residents who can’t travel far.

He said: “There is a lot of elderly people who live around here and they can’t be travelling half a mile to find another one.

“It is getting to Christmas time soon as well, so lots of people will want to post their cards.

“I can’t believe they can just close a post box without giving anyone any prior warning or telling them where else they are supposed to go. It is just ludicrous.

“This area also has a lot of businesses nearby who use the post box a lot so it will cause a lot of problems for them.”

Mr Brown added that the post box was a vital part of the community and many people were very upset about it.

He added: “Lots of people have been asking me why it is sealed off and I can’t give them an answer, nobody will tell me.”

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said that the post box had to be sealed because of safety issues.

She said: “We can confirm that the postbox has been sealed temporarily as our drivers are finding it increasingly difficult to park safely in the vicinity so that they can empty it.

“We will be moving the postbox to a new location in the near future and we are currently assessing potential new sites.

“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience and ask them to use any of the other eight post boxes nearby, or they can drop off their mail at any Post Office branch.

“There are eight post boxes within half a mile of the Nottingham Road, Hill Top box.”

The post boxes in locations nearby include:

  • Common Lane 418m
  • Main Street Newthorpe 596m
  • Walker Street Lynncroft 598m
  • Newthorpe Common 600m
  • Valley Drive 602m
  • North St Newthorpe 706m
  • Queens Road 728m
  • Old Eastwood PO boxes 748m
