Delight as Huddersfield police box that was defaced yellow is being repainted

A Kirklees councillor who was ‘nearly in tears’ after vandals repainted a Grade II listed ‘Tardis’ old-style police box bright yellow says he is delighted it is being restored.

Kirklees councillor Bernard McGuin, (Almondbury, Con), was horrified to see the wooden police box on Northgate in the village had been partially painted bright yellow. It dates back to the 1920s or 1930s, is made of timber and was listed in 1987.

And it’s not just the police box that has been defaced – Royal Mail post boxes in the area have also been painted a variety of colours – yellow, lime green and turquoise by someone styling himself The Green Pimpernel. A car was also painted yellow.

West Yorkshire Police had emailed councillors requesting information about the police box incident.

Clr McGuin said: “Five years ago, after months of negotiations, the box was renovated. Recently the box had shown signs that paint needed retouching. I had only just requested this when vandals painted it yellow.

“I was delighted that the police architectural unit came along and repainted it blue. I have been told this was done quickly so as not to spoil the Jubilee celebration. The lads doing the painting said that more work will be done later. It is, therefore, a double celebration.

“I really hope this is the end of the multi-coloured mayhem now. The costs of this must be big and ultimately the public pay the price. If anyone has information about who is doing this, please pass it on to the police.”

And he joked: “Unfortunately, the stocks in Almondbury churchyard are not operational and illegal to use. This vandalism has upset many people.”
