Derelict Anlaby Road car showroom to be transformed into £6m health centre

A derelict car showroom could be demolished to make way for a £6m medical centre – with work set to start next week.

Hull Royal Infirmary has applied to Hull City Council to demolish Block 46, also known as The Wilson Building, which is adjacent to the current Women & Childrens’ Hospital.

Plans are for the two-storey former car showroom and garage, which faces Anlaby Road, to be demolished and be replaced by a diabetes centre.

In an application to the council’s planning department, a spokesman said: “The car showroom and garage located on the front of the Hull Royal Infirmary campus is currently used as the post room for the Trust, along with some admin functions.

“The demolition of the Wilson Building is part of the published Estates Strategy for Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and has been highlighted for demolition for several years.

“The current backlog maintenance costs are a significant expenditure for the Trust and the savings made by removing the building have been factored into the Business Case for the new replacement building.

“The Wilson Building is an old car showroom in a state of disrepair and is unfit for any clinical use or purpose.

“The Wilson Building occupies a prime location at the ‘front of house’ on the Hull Royal Infirmary site but does not contribute a positive image of the Trust in any way shape or form as one of the first visual impressions that staff, visitors, patients and public will get of the Trust.

“It is proposed to demolish the Wilson Building and replace it with a new £6m Diabetic Centre that will provide improved services for patients, be visually appealing, lift the image of the Trust and contribute to an improved streetscene on Anlaby Road.”

In December 2017, it was announced Dr Assem Allam would be donating £3m towards the building of the new medical centre, which will develop research facilities in a number of areas such as diabetes, endocrinology and metabolic bone disease.

As well as providing state-of-the-art facilities for research, the construction of the new centre is also aimed at enticing a “high calibre of staff” to the area, putting Hull Royal Infirmary on the map for world class research.

The application form details that, if successful, building work will begin on the centre on September 1, and will likely be completed by the middle of October 2019.
