A “mean and despicable” burglar raided a nurses’ staff room at Hull Royal Infirmary, then smashed through the car park barrier when stealing one of their cars.
Ashley Taylor, 28, entered the third-floor staff room on December 29 last year while the nurses were on night duty, prosecutor David Bradshaw told Hull Crown Court.
He stole three sets of house keys, three sets of car keys, and a packet of cigarettes. The brazen thief then went into the hospital car park and stole one of the victim’s “classic” Hyundai cars – crashing through the barrier on the way out.
The vehicle was later recovered. Taylor, who gave a “no comment” police interview, admitted burglary and theft.
Judge Paul Watson QC, Hull’s most senior judge, deferred sentence until December 20 and told Taylor’s barrister, Rachel Scott: “Well, he’s done his best to spoil their Christmas, Miss Scott. If he steps out of line I’ll be ruining his.”
‘It doesn’t get much lower’
Judge Watson, Honorary Recorder of Hull and the East Riding, told Taylor: “Ashley Taylor, I have already described this offending as mean and despicable, and that’s what it was; going into a hospital and stealing from people going about their business for the health service.

“It doesn’t get much lower than that. Fortunately, the car was recovered.”
The judge told Taylor the nurses “were left feeling defiled by what you did.
“That said, I know how ill your father is and I’m able to reflect your guilty plea and the fact you have shown over the years, although you’ve got a bad record, you can keep out of trouble for a long period of time.”
The judge told Watson, of Boughton Avenue, Scunthorpe, if he committed a further offence before his sentencing date he would face at least 12 months in jail.
He also ordered him to begin saving to pay compensation to the nurses, saying: “Do something to help them enjoy this Christmas, as you tried your best to spoil their last.”
