A Detroit woman is facing several charges for alleged mail theft in Troy.
Khaira Howard, 25, was arraigned Thursday in 52-4 District Court for multiple felony charges of receiving and concealing stolen property and possession of stolen financial transaction devices, as well as a driver’s license violation. Howard is in the Oakland County Jail, with bond set at $141,000.
According to the Troy Police Department, officers had been conducting extra patrols in a neighborhood near Crooks and Big Beaver roads due to numerous complaints of mail theft from residents when Howard was seen opening a mailbox and attempting to remove mail. Inside her vehicle were numerous pieces of mail from Troy residents along with personal checks and credit cards belonging to other people.
Howard’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 26.
Troy police remind residents to be vigilant as reported mail thefts have been on the rise lately, as stolen mail can lead to identity theft, stolen checks and negative effects on credit ratings.
