Devon leads South West foodie scene with eight new places in guide

Eight new Devon restaurants have been named in the latest edition of the region’s leading dining guide – as hospitality giants gathered for a celebration of South West excellence.

The Trencherman’s Guide has unveiled its 33rd edition – with 28 new restaurants across the South West making the cut. Devon claimed the largest share of new entries, further cementing its reputation as a foodie destination.

The new Devon additions include Exeter’s long-standing favourite Harry’s Restaurant and the elegant new opening The View.

South Pool’s charming Millbrook Inn also makes an appearance, having impressed judges with its quality and consistency.

Seaton’s historic Restaurant 1685 at Colcombe Castle Hotel joins the line-up, along with Le Vin Perdu in Ashburton, the stylish Restaurant Kensington in Lynton, and the coastal Sandy Cove Hotel in Combe Martin.

Rounding off the county’s new inclusions are The Arundell Arms in Lifton, The Castle Inn in Lydford, and The Tytherleigh Arms in Axminster.

The 33rd edition of the guide was launched on Monday, October 13 at Ugly Butterfly 2.0 in Newquay – the new home of chef Adam Handling’s flagship South West restaurant. Guests at the event included top chefs Michael Caines, Elly Wentworth and Handling himself.

Michael Caines MBE, chair of the Trencherman’s committee, said: “Trencherman’s goes from strength to strength. It’s more than just a guide: it’s a network of professionals working very hard here in the South West. It’s not been an easy year in hospitality but the Trencherman’s Guide, now celebrating 33 years, continues to champion the South West extremely well. It’s a collective of excellence; every restaurant included fits the criteria of quality, which speaks volumes for the region.”

Editor Abi Manning of Salt Media added: “For 33 years the Trencherman’s Guide has provided discerning diners with the definitive list of the most authentic, creative and innovative dining experiences across the South West of England. The latest edition is a true celebration of the kaleidoscopic array of dining concepts to be found in this food-rich area of the country.”

Guests at the launch were treated to a multi-course feast prepared by Trencherman’s chefs Adam Handling and Jamie Park of Ugly Butterfly, Elly Wentworth of Fowlescombe Farm and Millbrook Inn, and Ben Champkin of Catch at the Old Fish Market in Weymouth.

Drinks were provided by Hallgarten & Novum Wine, Trevethan Distillery, Navas Drinks and St Austell Brewery, with ingredients sourced from local and specialist suppliers including Classic Fine Foods, Philip Warren Butchers and St Ewe.

First published in 1992, the Trencherman’s Guide showcases the finest restaurants, dining pubs and foodie hotels in the region, with every venue independently verified to meet stringent quality standards.
