Dimitar Mitov has warned his shot-shy Aberdeen mates they are letting their third place hopes slip through their fingers.

But the goalkeeper is adamant they will go to Ibrox to face Rangers on Sunday with no fear as they look to regain a grip in the battle to finish best of the rest.

Jimmy Thelin’s men failed to register a single shot on target as they went down 1-0 to St Mirren on Saturday to drop three points behind Hibs. Mitov admits it felt like a step backwards after the Dons had given themselves a huge shot in the arm by beating the Hibees a week earlier.

He said: “You probably can say that way because now it’s pretty much not in our hands. We need to win every single game and Hibs need to slip up, which is something we cannot control. What we can control is our performance in the next remaining games of the season. This group has bounced back quickly before and I’m positive we can do it again.

“It just didn’t happen for us going forward on Saturday. I always ask myself this question: how many saves did the other goalkeeper make? In my memory, I don’t think he’s made any.

“We need to look at how we can improve because we had a lot of possession of the ball. I felt like in transition we were creating much but we were not testing the goalkeeper. That’s something for us we’re definitely going to have to analyse and see where we can improve.

“Of course, we go to Ibrox with no fear. We respect everybody, but we go there with no fear. We’re trying to play our football. We’re trying to do the things we do well. When we do that, we’re a very good team. I’m sure when we stick to the basics and stick to the things we do well, we’ll look very dangerous.”

St Mirren have now beaten Aberdeen in every one of their last three meetings. But the Buddies are also unbeaten against Hibs all season. And with David Gray’s side still to visit Paisley before the end of the campaign, Mitov hopes Saints could still do them a favour.

He said: “Listen, it’s a very difficult place to come because they have a unique playing style where they’re very physical, very big boys in their team and they’re very good at it.

“You have to give them credit for what they can do very well. They defend well, they play for set pieces and that’s how they scored.

“It’s one of those afternoons where we need to forget as quick as possible, clear our heads and we need to go into the next game with a positive mindset.”
