Disabled postman writes letter to residents after complaints

The much-loved postie, who delivers mail in Lane End, wanted to address concerns.

Royal Mail sent out a letter to his customers, seen by the Bucks Free Press, which said the postman faces challenges “due to disabilities, particularly hearing and speech impairments”.

Royal Mail also explained: “We understand that his disabilities may sometimes pose communication barriers leading to potential misunderstandings or challenges in interaction.

“We want to ensure that you are aware of his situation and kindly request your cooperation and understanding in making his job a little easier.”

The letter, which Royal Mail says was written with the postman’s approval, has been met with backlash by some residents.

Tena Savory questions why Royal Mail had to highlight his disability in the first place.

She said: “I and many others are so upset and annoyed by this letter. It is very insensitive, derogatory and discriminatory.

“He has been our postman for many years and we have never had any issues. In fact he is so conscientious and does everything by the book.

“I think he deserves to know how much we as villagers support him 100%.

“I am not quite so negative about Royal Mail and there intention was to help… but I do question there method of highlighting his disability as making things better.

“These days I thought there were definite rules about confidentiality especially regarding disability.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Our postman felt it necessary to advise customers of his circumstances following a number of complaints.

“He actively participated in drafting the letter and approved the final version before it was distributed.”
