Mail delivery services in the UK have always been limited to six days a week.
Opening on Sunday, the Christian day of rest, was always a no-no. Nobody worked on a Sunday – not even your local postman.
But things did change a few years ago when Royal Mail decided Sundays weren’t so bad after all.
This came around the time that high street stores started opening up their weekly hours across Sunday as well.
So does Royal Mail actually deliver post on Sunday? Here’s what you need to know…
Does Royal Mail deliver post on Sundays?
It was the case for some time that Royal Mail didn’t deliver a thing on Sundays – and for the most part you still won’t get letters and other correspondence then.
However, that doesn’t mean the company completely shuts up shop.
Royal Mail now operates a Sunday delivery service which began on a trial basis in 2014 but has now been rolled out to around 12,000 online retailers who use their Tracked24 services for parcel delivery.
This means anybody who orders from a website using that service on a Saturday could potentially have their goods the next day, if they choose that option.
Royal Mail began their service in response to the popularity of Amazon, which has always offered delivery on Sundays (via Royal Mail) if you pay for the service.
Chief commercial officer Nick Landon said: ‘Royal Mail is transforming to make sure we deliver what you need now and in the future.
‘This change will help thousands of businesses to offer the most convenient delivery options to their customers and to compete and grow.’
As well as delivery you can also pick up Royal Mail parcels from a collection point on a Sunday if a delivery card has been left for you.
You can use the website to find out your nearest collection point, and its Sunday opening hours – as well as get information about weekend service updates.
