Driver cut out of van and two others in hospital as rush-hour accidents cause traffic gridlock

Four people have required medical treatment after being involved in separate road traffic incidents on Wednesday afternoon.

Police, fire and ambulance responded to smashes in Marton and central Middlesbrough which led to road closures and delays for motorists.

The first incident happened at around 2.45pm on Newport Road in central Middlesbrough and involved a bus and another vehicle.

It is understood a car “cut up” the bus, causing it to brake sharply.

Two people were taken to hospital and one person was treated with oxygen at the scene.

A Royal Mail van was also involved in one crash

Cleveland Fire Brigade said: “A car cut up a bus, which carried out an emergency stop, there was no collision.

“First aid and oxygen was given to one casualty by fire brigade personnel, while other passengers were assisted by ambulance crews.

“We also made the road area and bus safe.”

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed that one person was taken to James Cook University Hospital, while another was taken to the University Hospital of North Tees.

A third person was treated at the scene before being discharged.

The second incident occurred minutes later at 3pm on Stokesley Road in Marton, near to the Rudds Arms pub, and involved two vehicles, one of which was a Royal Mail van.

A statement from the Brigade added: “On arrival there was one person walking wounded, and one other person trapped.

“One person was extricated by Fire Brigade personnel using Holmatro Hydraulic Cutting equipment, and transported to hospital by ambulance.”

The road was closed in both directions south of the junction with The Grove, Marton and traffic soon built up through Marton and Nunthorpe along the busy commuter route.

The road was reopened shortly before 5pm after one van was recovered.
