Drivers urged to legally get car tax reduced from £190 to £0

Drivers may see car taxes slashed by half under DVLA incentives. According to official documents, drivers can receive up to 50 per cent off car taxes if they receive certain benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ).

The DWP will give drivers who are eligible support as long as they qualify for the reductions and are eligible. Drivers will need a letter or statement from the Department for Work and Pensions that shows their PIP rate and the dates associated with it which can be used to claim the mobility discount.

The flat rate cost of car tax for the 2024/25 financial year is £190. Motorists will also need their vehicle logbook, a V10 form, and evidence of a current MOT including the history or certificate. “The vehicle must be registered in the disabled person’s name or their nominated driver’s name,” the DVLA says.

“It must only be used for the disabled person’s personal needs. It cannot be used by the nominated driver for their own personal use.” You can apply for exemption from paying vehicle tax if you get the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA).

You can also apply if you get the enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or enhanced rate mobility component of Adult Disability Payment (ADP) or higher rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment.

You can also apply if you get the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement or Armed Forces Independence Payment. You can only use your exemption on one vehicle at a time. If you have more than one vehicle, you’ll need to choose which one will be exempt from vehicle tax.

You claim the exemption when you apply for vehicle tax. If you’re claiming for a vehicle for the first time, you have to claim at a Post Office. You must do this every time you change your vehicle.
