Motorists have been issued a warning about a new driving law set to come into effect in January, which could see rule-breakers slapped with a £100 fine. The English council has announced that from January 6, 2025, drivers could face fines for parking on pavements.
This enforcement action is in line with the Transport (Scotland) Act 2019, which introduced a national ban on such parking offences. The Act makes it illegal to park on pavements, at dropped kerbs and double parking across Scotland.

From Monday, January 6, 2025, offenders could be fined up to £100 in South Lanarkshire. The legislation applies to both public and privately owned roads and footpaths, and covers all streets in South Lanarkshire, regardless of their design, length or purpose, including grass verges.
Exemptions apply to vehicles used for emergency services, road works, waste collection, postal delivery (Royal Mail only), registered medical practitioners, nurses or midwives providing urgent or emergency healthcare, and vehicles delivering or collecting goods from premises in the course of business (up to 20 minutes only).
Other exceptions include vehicles loading or unloading goods for business purposes (limited to 20 minutes) and vehicles assisting at the scene of an accident or breakdown.
