Drugs discovered in the post on ‘almost daily basis’

Orkney’s drugs dog, Zoe, has sniffed out and discovered large quantities of drugs coming via the post.

Drugs are coming into Orkney in the post on an “almost daily basis”, according to police.

Sergeant Hugh Moonie updated members of the community councils of Kirkwall and St Ola, and Stromness, on the issue earlier this week.

He said that the Orkney Drugs Dog is attending at Kirkwall Post Office and Stromness Royal Mail depot on an almost daily basis, where drugs are regularly discovered.

He reported on the fact that around £60,000 worth of illegal substances had been seized recently, which included two packages with a value of £1,300.

Follow-up investigations are carried out following each discovery, according to Sergeant Moonie, and action is taken, which can include search warrants being executed at addresses.

The officer said that in some cases, drugs are sent to empty addresses, or to people under false names.

The work of the police and the Orkney Drugs Dog charity was praised.
