DVLA issues eight-day warning to drivers ahead of April rule change

Drivers have been told there’s an important DVLA update coming in April they need to know about. Motorists have eight days to get ready for the new rules.

If you’re planning a trip abroad and need an international driving permit (IDP), things have changed. You can’t pop into the Post Office for one anymore. Now, you’ll need to visit a PayPoint store to get your IDP.

The car experts at Swansway Motor Group are advising all drivers: “It’s crucial for drivers to be aware of these changes. Plan accordingly to ensure you remain compliant with international driving laws,” reports Birmingham Live.

They also mentioned, “Not every country requires an International Driving Permit, but over 140 countries do. In key destinations like Turkey, Mexico, Canada, and Australia, being prepared with the correct type of IDP is crucial for lawful and hassle-free driving.”

So, before you jet off, make sure to check if you need an IDP and which one is right for your destination. From April 1, 2024, remember that PayPoint stores are the go-to places in the UK for your IDPs.

Even though many holiday destinations don’t ask for an IDP, there are still plenty of places like Turkey, Mexico, Canada, and Australia where it’s essential for legal driving.

When you’re getting ready to drive in another country, you might need something called an International Driving Permit (IDP). There are three types of IDPs, and the one you need depends on where you’re going to drive.

If you’re hitting the road before 1 April 2024, remember that IDPs are available at certain branches of the Post Office. However, if your travel date is after 1 April 2024, you’ll need to head to a PayPoint store to get one.

It’s crucial to have all the necessary permissions before sliding into the driver’s seat in a foreign country. The UK government advises: “You might need an international driving permit (IDP) to drive in some countries. Check if you need an international driving permit (IDP). You can get an IDP in person at the Post Office. You might need one for each country you’re visiting.”

They also make it clear: “Do not apply for an IDP if you’re moving abroad. You’ll need to either exchange your UK licence or apply for a new one in the country you’re moving to.”
