The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued an update to anyone aged 66 or over, who could be missing out. A new post on X, formerly Twitter, from the DWP’s official account on Monday is urging people to see if they can “unlock” around £4,200 a year.
In full, the update reads: “Are you over 66? A quick online application could unlock £4,200 per year on average in Pension Credit plus extra help with heating bills including a Warm Home Discount.”
Pension Credit, DWP adds, may help with heating bills. The benefits gives a financial boost to those over State Pension age who are on a low income, and can also help with housing costs such as ground rent or service charges.
A common misconception is that people who own their own homes, have other income, or have savings cannot get Pension Credit. Known as a “passport” benefit, Pension Credit can also open up additional help to people who claim it, such as the Winter Fuel Payment, mortgage interest support, a Council Tax discount, a free TV licence if you’re aged 75 or over.
You may also receive help with NHS dental treatment, travel expenses for hospital appointments, and glasses, as well as a discount on the Royal Mail redirection service if you move home. To find out more, or to see if you or somebody you know may be eligible, click here
