Eagle Radio – News – Delay to reopening of Haslemere Post Office

Haslemere Post Office will now remain at its temporary site until ‘late August’ due to delays to refurbishment work.

The original site at 3 West Street was set to reopen next week, but that now won’t happen because “additional building work has been required” for the project.

It means the Post Office will remain at the temporary location at the other end of West Street until the end of next month.

Those wanting to use the Post Office have had to visit 23 West Street since April, which has the opening hours Monday to Saturday, 9am until 5.30pm.

The new permanent Postmaster is Douglas Howard, a local businessman, whose father Brian Howard MBE was twice Mayor of Haslemere.

He teamed up with Richard Edwards to retain a Post Office and to restore the building, as well as increase the use of the property.

There had been large unused areas of the property which had previously housed a Royal Mail sorting office, with less than 30 per cent of the footprint being accessible to the public.

Work is ongoing to create a cafe area and retail space, along with toilets.

Back in April Mr Howard said:

“I am incredibly excited about the development of The Post Office in Haslemere.

“Upgrading and refurbishing this beautiful building to house our English Drinks business (Redh) and as an added bonus retaining and enhancing the Post Office for the local people is something we all feel passionately about.”
