East Lothian Messenger talking newspaper seeks new users

The East Lothian Messenger, run by volunteers, offers a weekly 90-minute recording of local news for those who struggle to read print.

The service is available to anyone in East Lothian with a temporary or permanent disability affecting their ability to read a printed newspaper.

Even those who have moved away from the area can continue to receive the service.

The recordings, which are made with the permission of the East Lothian Courier, are distributed on USB memory sticks via Royal Mail’s free postage for blind people.

The newspaper will also hold a coffee morning at the Hope Rooms, North Berwick, next Saturday (May 4), from 10am until noon.

The event is an opportunity for people to meet the service’s volunteers, listeners and their families, while enjoying refreshments and a bake sale and tombola.

For those without a means to listen to a memory stick, the service can provide a simple-to-operate player.

The talking newspaper is keen to expand its mailing list and asks anyone who might benefit from the service to contact co-ordinator Veronica Wallace on 07879 870232.

The service also needs volunteers to help with copying and distributing the recordings on a Friday afternoon at the Poldrate Granary in Haddington.

Volunteers are needed between 3.30pm and 5pm, and teams of two are only required every four or five weeks due to a rota system.
