East Renfrewshire MP visits Royal Mail posties for Christmas

Blair McDougall, MP for East Renfrewshire, visited Newton Mearns Delivery Office this month to show his support for the postal workers in his constituency during Royal Mail’s busiest time of the year.

Around twice as many parcels and letters are sent during the festive period compared with other months, as people shop for gifts online and send Christmas cards.

The delivery office has hired seven new recruits and an extra vehicle to meet the increased demand for deliveries in the area.

Mr McDougall spoke to customer operations manager James Rowe about Royal Mail’s strategy to make sending and receiving parcels as convenient as possible over the festive period by adding more choice.

This includes services like Parcel Collect, where posties pick up parcels from customers at the doorstep, and offering more ways to drop off parcels at convenient times and locations.

Royal Mail has already rolled out more than 5000 parcel points this year, including at Collect+ stores and its growing number of parcel lockers.

James said: “It was great to have Blair visit our delivery office, and to show him how we are gearing up for our peak period.

“We are pulling out all the stops to deliver Christmas for our customers.”

Across the UK, 16,000 temporary workers have been recruited to help its 85,000 posties sort the additional mail and increasing number of parcels.

Almost 4000 new vans, trucks and trailers are being added to the fleet in time for Christmas.

Mr McDougall added: “There’s a reason Royal Mail is the trusted name in delivery – it’s because posties go the extra mile to get letters and parcels to local people.

“It wouldn’t be Christmas without the huge amount of work put in by posties and we all owe them a huge thanks for making this time of year so special for the rest of us.”
