East Sussex: Woman’s frustration amid blue badge delays

A 78-year-old woman from Lewes, who wishes to remain anonymous, applied for a blue badge at the beginning of July following a hip operation.

She said she is currently struggling to walk and can only “do about 20 steps before needing to stop and rest”.

The woman said her application was not reviewed until September, at which point it was passed onto an assessor.

When she reported this to The Argus in early November, she had not received a response to the application.

She said: “I am having chemo at the moment and I am really up against it.

“It’s been over five months, I need the badge now.

“I rang up last Friday, my son has even been down there.

“We can’t get anywhere with it. I do not need all this.

“I have fallen over several times.”

A spokeswoman for East Sussex County Council confirmed there are delays with applications currently due to the “number of applications” and “staffing pressures”.

They said: “We apologise for the delay experienced by this applicant, who should now have received a response to her application.

“We have received more than 15,600 applications for blue badges so far this year, some of which will require a full assessment.

“The number of applications and staffing pressures have led to delays, and we are taking measures to address this.”
