The Scottish capital’s airport 2.5 hours from Newcastle in a “localised” issue with IT systems
Edinburgh Airport has shut down flights this morning following a massive IT outage. This leaves flights grounded on the tarmac and thousands of travellers stranded.
In a post on the Airport’s X (formerly Twitter) account, it states, “Due to an IT issue with our air traffic control provider, no flights are currently operating from Edinburgh Airport. Teams are working on the issue and will resolve as soon as possible.
“We will provide updates when possible – please contact your airline for the latest information on your flight.”
Sky News understands there is “no current timeframe for recovery” for the IT issues. The airport alerted people of the issues at 9:29 am this morning.
Edinburgh Trams also notified passengers on it’s social media channels. Its post read: “If you’re travelling with us to @EDI_Airport this morning, please be aware that flights are not currently operating.”

Air traffic control at the airport is provided by ANSL, however, the cause of the IT issues are not yet known.
Several of flights were expected to arrive within the next hour, ranging from the Shetland Islands to Washington DC. Some flights have already been forced to divert, with a Delta Airlines flight from New York now heading for Dublin, according to FlightRadar24.
However, some flights are now being allowed to depart, according to the site. British Airways flight BA1439 and EasyJet flight U2854 have both successfully taken off, however they were both delayed from around 8am, highlighting how long the issue has been affecting the airport.
While air traffic may seem to trickle through now, it’s not yet clear if the IT issue is cleared, or how this may affect the rest of the day’s worth of flights.
The delays have resulted in a large backlog of passengers waiting for information on their flight departure.
According to European aviation support organisation Eurocontrol, Edinburgh’s arrivals are suspended until at least 2pm due to “ATC Equipment (System Problems).”

Update: Flights have now been restored to the airport, according to a statement on Edinburgh Airport’s X page.
