Eight-day DVLA warning to drivers ahead of April rule shake-up

Drivers have been warned to get ready for some new rules from the DVLA starting in days. Motorists have been told to “plan accordingly” ahead of the April change.

For those travelling abroad and needing an international driving permit, or IDP, you can’t get them at the Post Office anymore. Now, you have to go to PayPoint stores to get one.

Swansway Motor Group experts are telling all drivers: “It’s crucial for drivers to be aware of these changes. Plan accordingly to ensure you remain compliant with international driving laws.”

They also said, “Not every country requires an International Driving Permit, but over 140 countries do. In key destinations like Turkey, Mexico, Canada, and Australia, being prepared with the correct type of IDP is crucial for lawful and hassle-free driving.”

So, before you go on a trip, check if you need an IDP and which kind you need. Remember, from 1 April 2024, you can only get your IDPs from PayPoint stores in the UK.

Even though you might not need an IDP for most holiday spots, there are still lots of places like Turkey, Mexico, Canada, and Australia where you should have one to drive legally.

If you’re planning to drive abroad, you might need a special permit called an International Driving Permit (IDP). There are three different types of IDPs, and the one you need depends on the country you’ll be driving in.

If your trip is before 1 April 2024, you can get your IDP at certain Post Office branches. For trips on or after 1 April 2024, you’ll need to visit a PayPoint store instead.

The UK government has made it clear: “You might need an international driving permit (IDP) to drive in some countries. Check if you need an international driving permit (IDP). You can get an IDP in person at the Post Office. You might need one for each country you’re visiting.”

They also advise: “Do not apply for an IDP if you’re moving abroad. You’ll need to either exchange your UK licence or apply for a new one in the country you’re moving to.”
