Royal Mail released the figures for its Dog Awareness Week

Royal Mail said 883 of the injuries were caused at customers’ doors or in their front gardens.

Postie Tina O’Toole, who has been in the job for three years, had to have a skin graft and take five weeks off work after being gored on her calf in Warrington, Cheshire.

She said: “I looked down at my leg to see the blood seeping through my trousers. I went into shock.

“Owners often say their dogs won’t bite but there is no guarantee. Any dog can become aggressive and attack.”

Royal Mail released the figures for its Dog Awareness Week.

It will see a postmark appear on mail warning people to keep their pets out of the way when posties are on their rounds.

Owners are warned they face unlimited fines and even prison if their dog attacks.

Last year one man from Romford, Essex, had to fork out £9,000 after his hound nipped a postwoman’s finger.

Another owner, from Oxford, got a 16-month suspended jail sentence and was banned from owning dogs after his aggressive mutt gnawed a postman’s hand.
