Ekka public holiday 2020: What’s open this Royal Show day

With COVID restrictions in place, Queensland’s Ekka public holiday will work a little differently this year. Find our list of services and stores still trading on Friday 14 August during this Royal Show day.

SHOW DAY

This year’s Show Day will occur on Friday 14 August 2020 for the first time. Due to COVID restrictions throughout this year, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk chose to move Brisbane’s traditional midweek Ekka holiday to create a long weekend in order to boost business for struggling tourism operators in Queensland. Listed are the regions which have been affected by the change of date.

Charters Towers Region

City of Brisbane

City of Gold Coast

Logan City

Mackay Region

Rockhampton Region

Shire of Burdekin

Shire of Cloncurry

Shire of Livingstone

Weipa Town Area

Whitsunday Region

POST

Some Post offices may be open depending on the local arrangements. Please make sure to double check your local branch before heading out.

SHOPPING CENTRES

Westfield Carindale, Garden City, Chermside – 10AM – 5PM

Westfield North Lakes: 9AM – 5.30PM

Queens Plaza – 10.30AM – 4PM

Macarthur Central – 9AM – 9PM

The Myer Centre – 10AM – 5PM

Indooroopilly Shopping Centre – 10AM – 4PM

Aspley Hypermarket, Sunnybank Plaza – 9AM – 6PM

SUPERMARKETS

Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA will be open at reduced hours depending on individual stores and shopping centres.

Newmarket State School have grown a giant pumpkin for this year’s Ekka judging, and are very excited about it.

FOOD

Experience the delicious and classic tastes of the Ekka this season with special pop up events.

If you’re near the Brisbane Showgrounds, make sure to take the detour through the Ekka Drive Through. The pop-up drive through outlet will be serving Strawberry Sundaes and Dagwood Dogs from August 7-16. Drive Through will be open 11AM – 7PM with entry via O’Connell Tce.

King Street in Bowen Hills will also feature a pop-up shop for Ekka favourites like the Dagwood Dogs, Strawberry Sundaes and an Ekka Tasting Plate. Located between Beerhaus and Kuhl-Cher Coffee and open 11AM – 7PM.

Pop-up Ekka stores will also be appearing around Brisbane in these areas

Morayfield Shopping Centre – 7-10 August, 14-16 August

Skygate – 7-9 August, 14-16 August

Orion Springfield – 7-9 August, 14-16 August

Logan Hyperdome – 7-16 August

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Most bus services will operate to a Sunday/public holiday timetable due to the Royal Show day long weekend. An extra 73 evening and night services will run in and out of Brisbane City. Make sure toplan your journeyahead of time.
