Elderly men attacked after intruder ‘smashed’ their way into Fylde home

A man has been arrested after a ‘distressing’ break-in at a house in Ansdell where two elderly men were attacked.

Police were called to the property on Kingsway at around 2am today (Sunday, December 11) after three pensioners – a couple aged in their 70s and another man in his 80s – were woken up by somone breaking in.

Officers found that someone had smashed their way into the property, before the two men had gone to investigate the noise. Both of them were then assaulted. The man in his 80s was taken to hospital with suspected fractured bones. The second man, and the woman, suffered cuts due to the broken glass in the property.

Police searched the area surrounding the street and a short while later a man was arrested on suspicion of burglary. He is currently in hospital receiving treatment for minor injuries that were allegedly sustained during the incident.

Det Ch Insp Lee Wilson of Lancashire Police said: “This was an incredibly distressing incident for the three people in the address, all of whom have been left feeling shaken and upset. Nobody should have their home violated in this way, let alone be assaulted and left with potentially serious injuries. We take this type of crime extremely seriously.

“Thankfully the man in his 80s who was assaulted is not thought to be as seriously hurt as first appeared. A man is in custody and will be interviewed in due course. We are now asking anybody with information about this incident to get in touch.

“Perhaps you were driving in the area or returning home from a night out and saw somebody acting suspiciously, or perhaps you have CCTV, doorbell footage or dashcam from around the same time which could help us.”

Anybody with information should contact us on 101, quoting log 156 of December 11.
